Champions League Matchday 6 Preview
Champions League matchday 6 is around the corner and the gates to the knockout round are quickly closing, making for some very interesting football betting. Here’s a quick roundup of the fixtures involving the four English teams ...
Chelsea – Valencia
The heat is on Chelsea and, more specifically, manager Andres Villas-Boas. While the 3-0 win at Newcastle brought some peace of mind to the boys from the Bridge, it still cannot gloss over the disastrous recent run that has seen them fall back in the Premier League title race, exit the Carling Cup at the quarter final stage and left them in danger of an early exit from the Champions League for the first time since Roman Abramovich took over. Anything but a win or 0-0 draw against Valencia will mean the end for the Blues and will possibly be the final act of their young coach.
Olympiacos - Arsenal
With top spot in group F already secured thanks to Robin Van Persie’s brace against Dortmund, the Gunners have the luxury of using this game as a practice match. But, while they sit back, relax and think of the knockout stage, their opponents need nothing less than a victory and also need Dortmund to avoid defeat if they want to join the Londoners in the next round. The Greeks managed to beat Arsenal in the same fixture back in 2009 – can they seal a repeat while the Gunners’ minds are elsewhere?
Basel - Man Utd
United’s recent lack of luster has left them in a far less comfortable position than they’re used to. Still without their spot in the next stage, they need to avoid defeat in Switzerland to avoid an embarrassing early exit from the competition and, although it sounds simple, last season’s finalists have been less than convincing so far. Even if they come away with a win, Benfica’s home game against group C whipping boys Oțelul Galați means the Red Devils will probably only claim second spot in the group and will therefore face a much tougher challenge in the knockout stage.
Man City – Bayern Munich
No matter what happens in this game, City will continue their European journey in February. Whether, it will be in the Champions League or the Europa league depends very much on Wednesday’s results. If they want to continue in the Champions League, the Premier League leaders must defeat the German giants and then hope that Villarreal can pick up the first point of their campaign. Anything else and it will be the ignominy of Europe’s second competition for the Citizens.
