Top class jumping action returns to Newbury this weekend where one of the highlights of the national hunt campaign, The Hennessy Gold Cup, takes centre stage. Always a fiercely competitive race, this handicap has been won by some greats down the years but who will be adding their name to a roll of honour that includes the likes of Burrough Hill Lad, One Man and Denman?

Current favourite Aiteen Thirtythree hails from the all-conquering Paul Nicholls yard and looks to have the right credentials, being a second season chaser on a decent weight. The lightly raced seven year old warmed up for this with an encouraging second behind the classy Somersby at Kempton recently and with Ruby Walsh doing the steering he’s sure to be a popular betting selection. Wymott, yet another second season chaser was a very progressive horse last year and although he disappointed in the RSA Chase at the festival, trainer Donald McCain reports him to be in top shape ahead of his seasonal debut. There are plenty of others to consider, including the likes of recent Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Great Endeavour, Irelands leading chaser Joncol and the progressive Wayward Prince from the in-form Ian Williams yard. Whoever wins the prestigious prize, this grueling contest over three miles two and a half furlongs, jumping twenty one fences, promises to be an amazing spectacle.

It’s not all about the Hennessy on Saturday though. Amazing stayer Big Buck’s makes his seasonal debut in the Long Distance Hurdle at 2.35 and will go to post aiming for a 13th straight win. Over at Bangor all eyes will be on the classy Peddlers Cross who continues his education over fences in a build up to possible Cheltenham Festival glory in the Arkle. Newcastle also stage their big race of the season, The Fighting Fifth Hurdle, where Nicky Henderson’s champion hurdle winner Binocular is likely to be a warm order.
