Premier League Preview - Part Four
Wigan Athletic (last season = 16th) - The Latics won’t be fighting for a European spot this season but with stars like Hugo Rodallega, Chris Kirkland, Daniel de Ridder, Charles N’Zogbia, Emmerson Boyce, Olivier Kapo and newcomers Mauro Boselli and Antolin Alcaraz, they’ll cause problems for more than a few top teams, especially in their home games at the DW Stadium, and a good run in the cups is a definite possibility.
West Ham United (last season = 17th) – The Irons have changed both ownership and management in 2010. Gianfranco Zola steered them narrowly away from relegation and promptly had his contract terminated after recording the worst ever percentage of victories in the club’s history. New owners Messrs. Gold and Sullivan, have now put their faith in another foreign manager – Avram Grant, from whom they expect a drastic improvement. Grant took relegated Pompey to Wembley last season and but for a missed penalty from Kevin Prince Boateng, he almost prevented former club Chelsea from completing their historic double. Going back slightly further, Grant led Chelsea to their only ever appearance in the Champions League final where penalties again prevented him from making history. Grant has a tough task ahead of him but if he can keep hold of Scott Parker and get the best out of new signings Barrera, Piquionne and Hitzlsperger then brighter times are on the claret and blue horizon.
Newcastle United (last season = Championship - winners) – The Toon need no introduction. 50,000+ fans pack into St James’ Park every week to cheer-on their team and they are rarely let down in terms of effort and entertainment, regardless of the result. Newcastle blitzed the Championship last season, collecting 102 points and averaging almost 2 goals per game. Star players are keen to prove they belong in the Premier League and the same goes for novice manager Chris Hughton. Howay the lads!
West Bromwich Albion (last season = Championship – runners up) – The fourth Premier League representative from the Midlands, the Baggies are eager to show that they are here for the long haul and not just a flying visit. Roberto Di Matteo enjoyed moderate top-flight success as a player and if last season is anything to go by, his managerial top-flight career could be equally as fruitful. New signings Gabriel Tamas (Auxerre, £800,000), Pablo Ibanez (Atletico Madrid, free) and Steven Reid (Blackburn, free) will shore-up a team already containing some Premier League quality players, such as Scott Carson, Marek Cech, Jerome Thomas, Luke Moore and Abdoulaye Meite. First stop is Stamford Bridge on 14th August – damage limitation in that one and uphill all the way from there.
Blackpool (last season = Championship – Playoff winners) – The Seasiders are the least known entity in this season’s Premier League. Despite finishing 6th in the Championship, 32 points off the top and 21 points away from automatic promotion, they did win the Playoffs and thus are here on merit. Manager Ian ‘Ollie’ Holloway is known for his tough-tackling, efficient teams and Blackpool are no different. One notable signing is Israeli international Dekel Keinan, whom they acquired for free from Maccabi Haifa and has Champions League experience. Welcome to the big league...
