Premier League Preview - Part One
Chelsea (last season = 1st) - As double winners Chelsea prepare to defend their titles, they'll have to do so without the services of Joe Cole who recently completed his £90,000-a-week transfer to Roy Hodgson's Liverpool, and without Petr Cech, who won't be fit in time for the start of the season. The Blues have bolstered their midfield and defence with the signings of Israeli international Yossi Benayoun and goalkeeper Matej Delac, and are continuously being linked with World Cup winner Fernando Torres. Manchester United (last season = 2nd) - Sir Alex Ferguson's boys are fired up at the prospect of surpassing Liverpool's record by being crowned champions for the 19th time in their history and are second favourites behind Chelsea to do so. Wayne Rooney will be desperate to get back into the groove after a poor showing at this summer's World Cup and if he can better last season's 34 goal haul opposition defences best beware. Old campaigners Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes could be playing out their final season at the club they've served throughout their entire senior careers and they'll most certainly give everything for yet another medal. Signed in January for £10 million, Chris Smalling is ready to join up with the Red Devils this season and tricky Mexican forward Javier Hernandez will alleviate some of the pressure on the aforementioned Rooney in the goals department.
Arsenal (last season = 3rd) - Arsenal have looked strong as usual in pre-season and if they can hang on to Barcelona transfer target Cesc Fabregas then they'll have a World Cup winner captaining their side and pulling the strings in the heart of midfield. The departure of the promising Eduardo da Silva has been softened by the arrival of Marouane Chamakh from Bordeaux and the highly rated Laurent Koscielny has made the move to North London from Lorient and will provide Arsene Wenger with further options in the centre of defence after both William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre quit the club. Also on the lookout for a keeper to provide competition for Almunia, Fabianski and Mannone, Wenger is confident of achieving the Premier League success which has eluded his team over the last few years.
Tottenham Hotspur (last season = 4th) - Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp truly believes that his team can "challenge for the Premier League title" this term, despite finishing 5 points behind 3rd placed Arsenal and a whopping 16 points off champions Chelsea. This season, however, they will have the added distraction of Champions League football to contend with and, having craved it for so long, they will have to give equal if not more focus to that competition. Recent rumours have linked Spurs with players like Raul, Micah Richards and Boaz Myhill, but one new face who is certain to be at the Lane this coming season is Sandro Ranieri – a defensive midfielder signed from Internacional for £6 million, who is on the brink of breaking into the Brazilian national team.
Manchester City (last season = 5th) - The Mancini revolution continues at Manchester City, who narrowly missed out on a Champions leage spot last season after finishing 3 points behind Tottenham in 5th place. Boasting some of the best attacking talent in the Premier League, goals are pretty much guaranteed when this team is involved and whether or not they do release the jet heeled Craig Bellamy, as has been suggested, the signing of David Silva (£24 million from Valencia) will compensate both in terms of goals and assists – and the Spanish international is certainly more skilled in keeping his opinions to himself than the Welsh hot-head. The club with the richest owners in the league have also added Yaya Toure and Jerome Boateng to their ranks in multimillion pound deals, and have in no way indicated their intention to stop there – this alone makes them one of the most dangerous teams in the league and a very smart outside bet.
